Another beautifully lost dreamer with an incurable case of wanderlust.

A Wanderlust Poem

When I was a little girl all I ever wanted to be,

Was a fairy, a princess or mermaid; in the ocean swimming free.

It wasn’t until reality hit and those career dreams couldn’t come true,

I decided to be a wanderlust… “a what?”, “a where?”, “a who?”

Let me explain the meaning of this unusual word,

It’s a strong impulse to wander; to fly free as a bird.

It’s a burning desire to travel, a passion to explore,

It’s a calling for opportunity, a need to open every door.

I have a motivation for exploration with a tendency to get lost,

My path certainly isn’t to be an important corporate boss!

Instead, curiosity and creativity run through my veins,

Foreign languages and currency conversions fill my brain!

I don’t have a house to call my own, nor a flashy car.

My money is spent on airplane tickets to roam near and far.

I’d much rather have nothing more than a rucksack on my back,

I don’t know what direction I’m going, but I know that I’m on track.

Twenty five beautiful lands explored with many more still to see,

Deep in that present moment, there’s nowhere I’d rather be.

I’ve felt a million different emotions in just one beat of my heart,

I’ve exchanged smiles with strangers, even when we’re worlds apart.

To me, there’s no better feeling than free falling out the sky,

Diving in crystal clear waters, daydreaming on a mountain so high.

I’ve had nights I can’t remember and days I’ll never forget,

Talked on the beach until sunrise with friends I’d only just met.

To watch animals in the wild, to dance under the stars in the street,

To order off a menu with no idea what you’re about to eat!

Getting used to sleeping anywhere; bus or boat or train,

Learning to be adaptable and singing out loud in the rain.

Travel teaches lessons and puts perspective in your eyes,

Self discovery is a side effect; every moment you’ll grow wise.

Despite its harsh realities, our world is mostly kind,

Often people who have the least, are the most positive you’ll find.

To me, this life is far richer, than any job could pay,

Like everything, it has ups and downs but I regret not a single day.

There’s no need to give everything up or go back to the start,

Just open your mind, smile, and embrace the wanderlust in your heart.
