Totally Travel Talk with Kach

Today I am chatting with Kach Medina Umandap, the travel blogger behind Two Monkeys Travel. Kach is a 26 year old Filipina promoting a sustainable travel lifestyle. Together with her partner, Jonathan Howe, they work and travel, with the goal to complete an around the world trip while building up their savings to build a yoga and Ayurveda resort in the Philippines. Kach is currently writing a book about her life in the Middle East and the epic around the world journey she begun in April 2013. Hopefully, it will become a movie! Let’s find out this monkey’s views on travel…

What made you discover your passion for Travel?

I was born and raised in the Philippines and left the country at the age of 20 to work in the Middle East. As Filipinos, we grow up being taught that we should only leave the Philippines for three reasons: to immigrate to a Western country; to work abroad as an OFW and support the family back home; or to travel internationally as a tourist—an option usually available only to rich Filipinos.

But I’ve met a lot of people in the Middle East where I discovered about Backpacking and Long Term travel! Now, I want to inspire others to esp my fellow Filipinos that it is indeed possible for us to travel the world as opposed to cultural standard!

Are you a daredevil? What are the craziest things you have done during your adventures?

Even before this backpacking journey- I used to live in the Middle East, Kuwait and Iraq so I think I can consider myself as a daredevil!

For extreme sports, I’ve done quite a few including Skydiving in Dubai, Bungee Jumping, Cliff Jumping and Paragliding in India, Urban Abseiling and Death Road Biking in Bolivia, Hitchhiking in Asia and South America.

What is the next achievement that you want to tick off on your bucketlist?

Big Hitchhiking Trip in South America until we reach Antarctica.

Have you had any scary experiences while travelling?

Maybe my 300 KM solo hitchhiking in Laos, a crazy motorbike trip in North Vietnam and the Death Road biking in the Most Dangerous Road in the World in Bolivia.

Please share your favourite photograph that you have taken during your travels and tell us why you love it so much.

My favorite was taken at the Glacier in Patagonia, Chile. Growing up in the Philippines, I didn’t expect that I will be seeing snow in my life what more a glacier and it just happened to me at the age of 26! Ha!

Do you have any more travel plans currently in the pipeline?

We actually just bought a car in Costa Rica – a cheap 1988 Nissan Sentra and we’re doing a 2 month road trip in Costa Rica before heading up to other Central American countries.

This June 2015, my mom is joining us to backpack around Colombia down to Brazil, I haven’t seen her for 2 years that’s why I’m so excited to travel with her. After that, we will do a big hitchhiking trip down to South of Argentina to catch a cruise to Antartctica. So many plans, but I know our thoughts are powerful and dreams do come true!

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

We will probably be back in the Philippines by then and running our Yoga and Ayurveda Resort. Writing books and having children!

  1. Nice to keep up to date with Kach and their travels. I first came across these 2 a few months ago and their passion for travel is strong. It is also great that Kach is hoping to inspire more from her country that travel really is available to more people than they believe.

Nice favourite photo too, you look really happy there.

    • Thanks for your message. She’s very inspiring 🙂
I hope you are well and enjoying 2015 so far!
